The Mirpuri Foundation Sailing Trophy, one of the premier annual racing events in the world and part of the Mirpuri Foundation’s Marine Conservation program, has officially become a signatory of Sports for Nature, a groundbreaking initiative dedicated to leveraging the power of sports in addressing the global nature crisis.
The signing ceremony took place during COP 28 at the IUCN pavilion in Dubai, underscoring the commitment of the sailing community to environmental sustainability.
While the need for urgent action to combat the nature crisis is evident across all sectors of society, Sports for Nature recognises the unique role that sports can play. Developed in collaboration with key partners, including the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), International Olympic Committee (IOC), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and Sails of Change, the initiative aims to contribute to global efforts to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030.
The number of sports organisations committed to improving their performance on biodiversity under the Sports for Nature Framework more than doubled in the first year to 48, and spans from international federations and national associations to local clubs and large events.
Sports for Nature envisions a transformative role for sports in championing nature and actively participating in its protection and restoration. By engaging the sports community, the initiative seeks to accelerate actions at all levels and inspire others to join the cause.
“Sportspeople require clear water and clean air to perform. As such, they have a natural interest in protecting the environment and biodiversity.” – Sails of Change co-founder and IUCN Patron of Nature Yann Guichard
The moment for action has arrived- the rate of change in the ocean tells us there’s no time to waste. Changes are happening in our lifetime. We can and we must correct course now. By joining initiatives like Sports For Nature Framework we can show other industries and organizations what is possible.” – Paulo Mirpuri, President of the Mirpuri Foundation.
The Mirpuri Foundation Sailing Trophy, known for its commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible sailing practices, is aligned with the Sports for Nature Framework. In a promising development, it has been revealed that new partnerships within the Sports for Nature Framework are set to be announced soon. These collaborations are expected to enhance the initiative’s impact and broaden its reach across the sports community.
