The Mirpuri Foundation proudly supported the II Côrte-Real Symposium, held in Tavira, Portugal. This landmark event honored the enduring legacy of the famed Portuguese navigators João Vaz Côrte-Real and his sons, Gaspar and Miguel, whose pioneering expeditions in the North Atlantic during the 15th and 16th centuries helped shape the Age of Discovery.
Organized by the Côrte-Real Studies Commission of the Lisbon Geographical Society, with the support of the Tavira Municipal Council, the Mirpuri Foundation, and Vila Galé Hotels, the symposium took place at the Álvaro de Campos Municipal Library. Over two days, historians, researchers, and members of the public gathered for a series of thought-provoking presentations and discussions exploring the lives, voyages, and historical significance of the Côrte-Real family. The event highlighted Tavira’s unique connection to this maritime legacy and celebrated its vital role in Portuguese exploration history.
The symposium also paid heartfelt tribute to the late Professor Dr. José Manuel Ferreira Coelho, former President of the Côrte-Real Studies Commission and a proud native of Tavira, whose work greatly contributed to preserving and promoting the city’s historical narrative.
Held as part of the 150th anniversary celebrations of the Lisbon Geographical Society, the II Côrte-Real Symposium served as a meaningful reflection on Portugal’s seafaring past and a celebration of its cultural identity.
The Mirpuri Foundation’s support of the event through its Social Responsibility Program underscores its continued commitment to preserving national heritage, promoting education, and honoring individuals and communities who have shaped Portugal’s cultural and historical legacy.
