Mirpuri Foundation President and Founder Paulo Mirpuri gave a presentation to the famous Gstaad Yacht Club in Switzerland, speaking on his recent journey to the South Pole.
Paulo Mirpuri, who has just been inducted into the elite Explorers Club, led a 2019 expedition to the South Pole – the very heart of the White Continent – in his capacity as President of The Mirpuri Foundation, to raise awareness of the dangers of global warming and how its impact is affecting the polar regions.
Paulo’s talk, themed: ‘Antarctica – Perspectives from an Explorer,’ follows the safe completion of the January expedition to the Pole and back and coincides with the launch of a book Paulo Mirpuri wrote about the trip while travelling over the icy continent.
The event, which was held as part of Gstaad Yacht Club’s Speakers night, was held on August 22nd at the Club in the Swiss Mountains. The night has got underway at 7pm with a members’ drinks session before Paulo’s Antarctic presentation to around 50 members of the GYC and reciprocal clubs began at 7.30pm. After the presentation, a club dinner was served to guests.
Paulo’s address to the club touched on the extreme conditions encountered on the expedition and how it prepared for, and adapted to, the sub-zero environment, as well as explaining to members how the Polar regions are being negatively affected by Global Warning and the lessons to be learned from the expedition and the things it witnessed. Each member of the audience was then presented with the book that Paulo wrote about the journey.
Speaking ahead of the Presentation, Paulo Mirpuri said:
“Global Warming is of great concern to everyone at the Foundation and we are working hard to raise awareness of some of the dangers and consequences of rising global temperatures that we are seeing in our work around the planet. I am looking forward to share experiences with the members club and I am expecting an interesting and educational evening.”
Paulo Mirpuri is becoming increasingly well known in the explorer community. As well as his recent trip the to the South Pole and induction into the Explorers Club in New York, Paulo led a 2017 expedition to Mount Everest, while the Foundation is sponsoring a current expedition to study marine life and Fauna around the Cape Verde Islands and has previously sent a Mirpuri-led team to the top of Africa’s highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro, as well as backing an expedition deep into the Caucasus to search for, and learn about threats to, the endangered Persian Leopard.
The Gstaad Yacht Club was founded in 1998 by a group of sailing enthusiasts with the vision to ‘create a unique global yacht club away from the waters, instead of another local club by the waters’. With its club facilities based in the Swiss mountains and has developed to a club with 400 members from over 20 different countries.
