A must-see documentary, portraying the scientific breakthroughs and the richness of marine life of the Sal Island.
In the summer of 2019 the Mirpuri Foundation embarked on a Science Expedition in Cape Verde, aiming to study the biodiversity of its seas and to enhance knowledge of local marine life. The team discovered a new genus, naming it Mirpurina, in tribute to the Mirpuri Foundation’s support of the mission, and several species of this genus have now been identified. Now it’s time to unveil this must-see documentary, portraying the scientific breakthroughs and the richness of marine life of the Sal Island.
The documentary released today will also air in a conference soon to be organized in Cape Verde, detailing the expedition findings and publishing a book on it, an illustrated inventory of the species currently present in the archipelago.
The footage was shot and edited by Rafael Herrera, an experienced cameraman and documentary filmmaker, probably best known for his work on David Attenborough’s Blue Planet series, a programme credited with opening the eyes of the international public to marine conservation issues. He participated in the underwater research, accompanying the scientists and the team led by renowned Professor Jesús Ortea, who has been responsible for the discovery of 812 new marine species and has taken part in 26 previous research missions.
