Volvo Ocean Race Awards Night honored sailors and the Mirpuri Foundation participation
As part of the Lisbon stopover program and the end of Leg 1 from Alicante, Volvo Ocean Race hosted the Awards night at Estufa Fria, celebrating the winners of the first leg as well as the Portuguese involvement in the race. Mirpuri Foundation’s President, Paulo Mirpuri, joined the Lisbon City Hall representative Miguel Gaspar on stage to honor the Three Portuguese sailors taking part in the Volvo Ocean Race – Bernardo Freitas and Frederico Melo from the Turn the Tide on Plastic Team and António Fontes from Scallywaghk.
Bernardo Freitas and Frederico Melo addressed the crowd and gave their thanks to the VOR and to Mirpuri Foundation, the non-profit organization that made their participation possible by sponsoring the Turn the Tide on Plastic boat.
It was a remarkable moment on stage and a night to remember since it is the first time a boat is racing under the Portuguese flag in this competition and no Portuguese sailors have entered the race for the last 30 years.
