The international news organization Sky News was in Portugal to interview Dr.Luíza Mirpuri, Mirpuri Foundation’s Medical Advisor, for its documentary on “Turn the Tide on Plastic” boat of the Volvo Ocean Race and its mission to fight plastic pollution.
The doctor warned that plastic is slowly “killing the human race” as that the world is already registering an increase in the number of individuals suffering from cancer, allergies and infertility. Moreover, the next generations are predicted to witness as well the rise of new diseases from new contaminants.
The “Turn the Tide on Plastic” boat took onboard scientific equipment that carried out research on the presence of microplastics in the ocean throughout the Volvo Ocean Race. As the extreme round-the-world sailing event reached its end, the conclusion is very clear: plastic pollution has spread to every corner of the planet, this including the remote waters of Southern Ocean, where 26 particles of per cubic meters were detected.
